Outdoor Infrared Saunas

Considerations for outdoor infrared saunas

Many people now know about the benefits of infrared saunas. Health care professionals are recommending infrared sauna therapy to detoxify the body, and people are using them to lose weight, reduce their cellulite, improve their circulation, boost their metabolism, give them healthier-looking skin and improve their overall health and well-being. And, on top of all that, infrared saunas are great places to just sit in and relax.

When people think of infrared saunas, they usually visualize wooden cabins that outwardly resemble conventional steam saunas. They come in a variety of sizes, but they're almost always placed inside a day spa or a private home. In fact, many people don't realize outdoor infrared cabins even exist. This article is intended to help you decide whether an outdoor sauna might be the right choice for you in light of your particular circumstances.

For example, some people think about getting an outdoor far infrared sauna because the space they have available inside their home is very limited or even too small for an indoor model. Other people consider buying an outdoor sauna because they think it would be the ideal addition for their patio or deck, or because it would perfectly complement their hot tub, spa or swimming pool. But no matter why you're considering getting your own outdoor infrared cabin, there are several things you should keep in mind while you're shopping.

Ability to Withstand the Climate

You're bound to have some severe weather of one type or another no matter where you live. It might be icy temperatures and snow during the winter, hot, humid summers with occasional torrential rains, or the dry, baking heat of the desert. And Mother Earth can toss out thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes and other severe weather. You need to make sure the outdoor far infrared sauna you buy is designed to withstand whatever type of climate you have. You'll be able to enjoy your sauna for many years into the future, provided it survives the weather during all four seasons.

Construction

Different materials are used to make the exterior walls of outdoor infrared saunas. For example, some have walls made of bamboo, while others have more substantial walls made of wood and glass. Thick wooden walls are likely to withstand harsh weather far better than the lighter bamboo variety. You might also think about the roof of your sauna. A flat roof won't be a problem in an arid, desert climate, but if you live in a snow belt or an area that receives heavy rains, a pitched roof with shingles or tiles will make your sauna more weather-resistant.

If you've been doing any research on outdoor infrared saunas, you might have already found out that there simply aren't anywhere near as many choices as you would have if you were buying an indoor model. The cabins of some outdoor infrared saunas are treated with chemicals to deter insects and the formation of mildew and algae. This type of treatment is sensible, of course, because an outdoor sauna will be exposed to a variety of creatures as well as the elements. You might consider investigating the particular products that have been used to treat your sauna, however. After all, you don't want to sit in a sauna that emits toxic fumes from these chemicals.

The exterior walls of your outdoor infrared sauna should also be constructed with watertight joints. You don't want any water seeping inside when it rains, and it's absolutely essential to prevent water from coming anywhere near the sauna's electrical components.

Other Considerations

If you live where it gets cold during the winter, you should probably look at outdoor infrared saunas featuring powerful heaters. They will help your sauna heat up to the right temperature even if it's bitterly cold outside. Even though infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures than conventional steam saunas, you'll want your sauna experience to be at the right temperature even when it's very cold outside.

Finally, consider getting a weatherproof tarp to cover your outdoor infrared sauna while you're away on vacation or when you're not planning on using it for an extended period of time. The tarp can preserve the appearance of your sauna, help to protect it from the elements and extend its life.
